Winter is a harder problem than it looks. A closed pool sits for five or six months with no circulation, no testing, and no corrections. Whatever sanitizer residual you left in October is gone within weeks. From that point on, the only thing standing between your pool and an algae bloom is the algaecide you put in at closing — and it has to hold the line unattended, in cold water, in the dark, for the entire winter.
That’s a different requirement than a summer algaecide, which is topped up weekly and backed by an active chlorine residual. A winterizing algaecide gets one application and has to last.

After that the pool has no protection at all for five or six months, and algae doesn’t need warm water or sunlight to establish under a cover. Skipping the algaecide saves roughly the price of one bottle and routinely costs a full opening recovery: shock, algaecide, brushing, vacuuming, filter cleanings, and a pool nobody can swim in for the first two weeks of the season.
