BioGuard SoftSwim Filter Cleaner is formulated specifically for the biguanide chemistry of the SoftSwim program — and on a SoftSwim pool, filter cleaning isn’t optional maintenance. It’s the single most important routine task there is.
Biguanide sanitizer works by binding to contaminants and holding them in suspension so the filter can capture them. That’s a genuine advantage of the chemistry, and it’s the reason SoftSwim pools look as clear as they do. But it means the filter carries an unusually heavy load. Everything the sanitizer captures ends up in the media, where it accumulates as a soft, sticky residue that ordinary rinsing and backwashing simply don’t remove.
The result is predictable and it’s the number one complaint on biguanide programs: a filter that reads high pressure, delivers reduced flow, and won’t recover after cleaning, alongside water that turns cloudy for no obvious reason. Owners blame the sanitizer. Usually the sanitizer is working exactly as designed and the filter has stopped keeping up.
This product cuts through that residue. It removes the dirt, oils, and deposits that clog filter media, restoring circulation and water clarity and letting the filter operate at peak performance. It works in any filter type — sand, DE, or cartridge — with a specific procedure for each.
It’s also formulated to be biguanide-compatible, which matters more than it sounds. Filter cleaners built for chlorine pools aren’t necessarily safe to introduce into a SoftSwim system, and the whole premise of a biguanide program is that every product in it belongs there.
Pro Tip: On a SoftSwim pool, clean the filter before you chase cloudy water with chemistry. Biguanide loads filter media far faster than chlorine does, so a fouled filter is by far the most common cause of clarity problems on this program — and no amount of sanitizer, clarifier, or oxidizer fixes a filter that can’t move water. Check your pressure gauge first: if it’s climbing above your clean baseline, or if backwashing no longer brings it down, the filter is the problem. Clean it properly and the water usually clears on its own within a day.
